Published in 1927, Twilight Sleep is a satirical novel by Edith Wharton examining the superficiality and restlessness of New York’s wealthy elite during the Jazz Age. The narrative centers on Pauline Manford and her family, whose pursuit of distraction through fads, social reform, and personal indulgences highlights the disconnection and anxieties of modern life.

As one of Wharton’s later works, the novel reflects both her continuing critique of high society and her response to the cultural shifts of the 1920s. First editions were issued by D. Appleton & Company and are of particular interest to collectors of Wharton and American modernist fiction.
